Our Pastor

The Rev. Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick was born on August 29, 1975, in Newport News, Virginia, to a U.S. Navy family that in 1983 became an Evangelical missionary family, living in Virginia, upstate New York and Ohio. In 1985, his family moved to the Pacific island of Guam, where they stayed through the end of his freshman year of high school in 1990, when they moved back to Ohio. After graduating from high school in 1993, Fr. Andrew moved with his family to North Carolina.

From 1994 to 2001, Fr. Andrew studied at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, while working as a professional theatre technician/stagehand, becoming a supervisor at NCSU's Stewart Theatre and working in various freelance production positions. During this time, he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature, along with minors in Religion, Classical Studies, and Ancient Greek, as well as completing most of the coursework for a B.A. in Communication. While in college, he began reading about Orthodox Christianity and was received into the Church at All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church in Raleigh at Pascha of 1998.

After graduating from the university in 2001, Fr. Andrew continued to work as a stagehand, technical theatre supervisor and theatrical lighting designer. In May of 2002, he met Nicole Ann Boury, the daughter of Bechara and Shirley Boury, and the two were married on August 17, 2003. On March 5, 2007, Kh. Nicole gave birth to their first child, Evangelia Anna Esther, and on December 6, 2009, Elias Ignatius Vasilios was born.

In September of 2004, Fr. Andrew and Kh. Nicole moved to northeastern Pennsylvania, where Fr. Andrew studied in the Master of Divinity program at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary until May of 2007. On May 26, 2007, he graduated summa cum laude with Distinction, with honors in the field of Church History. The title of his master's thesis was “The Archbishop's Wife: Archbishop Aftimios Ofiesh of Brooklyn, the American Orthodox Catholic Church, and the Founding of the Antiochian Archdiocese (1880-1934).” Aside from the standard coursework, Fr. Andrew specialized in studying the history of Orthodoxy in America, and he also continued his previous study of Byzantine chant and became a proficient chanter.

Fr. Andrew was ordained to the holy diaconate on October 30, 2005, by His Grace Bishop THOMAS of Charleston and Oakland at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and to the holy priesthood on October 29, 2006, by His Grace Bishop ANTOUN of Miami at his home parish of All Saints Antiochian Orthodox Church in Raleigh, North Carolina.

From June 2007 to June 2009, Fr. Andrew served as the Assistant Pastor at St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Charleston, West Virginia, under the direction of the cathedral dean, the Very Rev. Olof H. Scott, as well as also serving in the Communications Staff of the Diocese of Charleston, Oakland and the Mid-Atlantic. In July 2009, he was appointed as pastor of St. Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.

Fr. Andrew's hobbies and interests include local and world history; traditional, folk and modern music; science fiction and fantasy; scenic and art photography; English Medieval and Renaissance drama and poetry; dabbling in ancient and modern languages and etymology; and localism/regionalism. He also plays the Appalachian mountain dulcimer and bowed psaltery.

Fr. Andrew serves as one of the Associate Directors of the Society for Orthodox Christian History in the Americas (SOCHA), as well as being one of the founding administrators of the OrthodoxWiki website. Fr. Andrew is the author of the Roads From Emmaus weblog, the Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy podcast, and the Roads From Emmaus podcast (both on Ancient Faith Radio).

Fr. Andrew has delivered public lectures on apologetics, ecology, Church history, and evangelism, as well as other matters pertaining to Orthodox Christian spiritual life, at various parishes as well as at Penn State University and Bucknell University.

Our Deacon

The Rev. Deacon Thomas Underwood, his wife Sh. Seung-Jae, and their three daughters have been members of St. Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church since 1993 when they converted to Orthodoxy.

Dcn. Thomas ordained to the diaconate on July 6, 2003, after completing the St. Stephen's Course in Orthodox Theology, a three-year correspondence and residency course. The following year, he received his Master of Arts degree in Applied Orthodox Theology from the University of Balamand in El-Koura, Lebanon.

Dcn. Thomas assists the pastor in the liturgical services, in visiting and ministering to the sick, and in representing the parish at various meetings and functions both within and outside of the Antiochian Archdiocese.

In addition to his duties as a deacon at St. Paul, Dcn. Thomas is employed as a professional firefighter by the City of Easton, Pennsylvania, and also works part-time as a deputy sheriff for the Northampton County Sheriff's Department.

Pastor Emeritus

The Very Rev. Fr. Theodore J. Mikovich was born on September 18, 1945, to Orthodox parents, John and Anna (Goida) Mikovich in Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania. He has two sisters, Helen (Berezniak) and Dorothy (Macenka). He was baptized by the Rev. John Zeliniak in St. John's Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church in Nesquehoning. It was in this church that as a young boy he served as an acolyte. It was also at St. John's that he began a life long career in teaching when he became a student religious education teacher. There he received the Boy Scouts of America "God and Country" Award, known in the Orthodox Church as the Alpha Omega Award.

Fr. Theodore is a graduate of Nesquehoning High School and East Stroudsburg University, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He also has a Master of Education degree from East Stroudsburg University. He was certified to teach kindergarten through eighth grade in the state of Pennsylvania. In 1967 he began his professional teaching career in the Salisbury school district.

On July 5, 1969, Fr. Theodore and Kh. Joanne were married in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. They have two sons, Gregory, married to the former Catherine Reese, and Christopher, married to the former Jillian Jordan.

Under the spiritual guidance of the Very Rev. Dimitri Voytilla, Fr. Theodore continued active church service as an acolyte, reader and adult education teacher at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church (OCA) in Bethlehem. He became a member of the Department of Education at St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary, and in 1983 he was accepted into the seminary as an extension student.

On February 27, 1991, Fr. Theodore was tonsured a reader and ordained a subdeacon by His Grace Bishop NICHOLAS of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese. Under the spiritual direction of the Very Rev. Robert Rebeck, he entered the Deacon Program at the Annunciation Retreat Center in Tuxedo Park, New York. On July 18, 2002, he received a Master of Arts degree in Applied Orthodox Theology from the University of Balamand in El-Koura, Lebanon.

In November 1993, Fr. Theodore became a member of St. Paul's in Emmaus with the Very Rev. John Kahle as his priest and father confessor. On September 28, 1997, he was ordained to the diaconate at St. Paul's by His Grace, Bishop ANTOUN. On May 16, 1999, Bp. ANTOUN ordained Fr. Theodore to the holy priesthood, and he was appointed pastor of St. Paul's upon the retirement of Fr. John.

Fr. Theodore served as pastor through June 2009, when he retired from active ministry. On October 18, 2009, he was elevated to the rank of archpriest.

Founding Pastor

Archpriest John Kahle was born July 19, 1928, in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, to James and Rachel (Ludwig) Kahle. He attended the elementary and high schools in his home town, and graduated Class Orator in 1946.

After serving four years with the United States Army, he began a 14 year career with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., serving as Supervisor of Plant Safety, Plant Planning Manager, and Manufacturing and Engineering Estimator. In 1964, he left Air Products and opened Kahle's Music Store in Emmaus, which he owned and operated with his family until 1995 when he retired from business.

A convert to the Orthodox Church from the Lutheran faith in 1951 when he married the former Helen Sikorski, Fr. John was ordained as subdeacon on December 24, 1979, by His Eminence, Archbishop ELIA and to the holy diaconate by His Eminence, Metropolitan PHILIP on September 28, 1980, at the Church of St. Ignatius of Antioch in Bolivar, Pennsylvania.

On April 28, 1982, he was ordained to the holy priesthood by Metropolitan PHILIP at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and served there as Assistant Pastor until 1987. In January of that year, Fr. John was appointed pastor of the newly founded Mission Church of St. Paul in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. Under his leadership, the parish grew from 45 members to 150 members and moved from the tiny church on S. 4th Street to its present location, a much larger edifice, at 156 E. Main Street in Emmaus.

On September 28, 1997, on the day that the new church was dedicated, Fr. John was elevated to the dignity of archpriest by His Grace, Bishop ANTOUN. He continued to serve the faithful of St. Paul as their pastor until his retirement in May of 1999. On April 6, 2008, Fr. John departed this earthly life and reposed in the Lord.

Fr. John and Kh. Helen have seven children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
